Also for doing an infant reborn head which type and size needle is best.I am just starting to gather my supplies to start reborning and need help on deciding what I need and what are the best items to buy. Is is possible you can give me a list as to everything I need. I have already bought three dolls but have not bought any tools or supplies yet. I would really appreciate your help. If there is a DVD or reborn book you recommend please list that also.

tools for rooting
by: Sandy

I recommend a size 42 or 43 needle for beautiful realistic looking hair. If your needle is any larger (meaning a smaller number) you may end up with blobs of fake-looking hair. Secrist has a wonderful rooting tool with a wooden handle. You will need to buy the cut needles. Good luck! Also, I recommend mohair from Ruby Red Galleria that you can get from Bountiful Baby. It is very nice and reasonably priced.

what helped me

One thing that I did invest in was a daylight lamp with a magnifying glass attached. I found the best one that I thought would be the best at HSN and it was just under craft lamp. The base is very heavy, so it won't tip over off the table where I have it. It's just been the best. Oh in the base of it, it has little places you can put things..like rooting needles for eyelashes etc.

Getting Started
by: Lisa (artist)

To get started, you are going to need to decide if you want to use air dry paints or the genesis heat set paints. I recommend you do your research on each as both have benefits and downsides. You'll need to have a set of paint brushes and sponges with different textures(cosmetic sponge, sea sponge, etc.) As far as a DVD, they are out there, but you can go to you tube and you'll find some tutorials there for free. One word of advice, it is not a paint by number so watch the tutorials and use them as a guideline because you'll find that you will have to adjust your technique based on the color of the vinyl, how it takes up the paint, and what colors you choose to mix to make your babies. You'll also need glue, felt, and a tool to open the nose should you choose to make the baby a breather(this, however, is not necessary, as long as you shade the nose) Now, to rooting. I would suggest you start off with a 38 gauge needle or a german fork needle. They are less likely to break, but you will break needles; it happens to all of us. The higher the number on the gauge of the rooting needle, the thinner and more careful you will have to be. As far as a tool, I just use the rooting needle, wrap a soft towel or gauze around the top and hold it in place with rubber bands. There are tools out there if you find that doesn't work. Take frequent breaks. Trust me, you'll be anxious to finish, but don't rush the process. When you go to root the hair, the vinyl on most kits are soft and do not need to be heated, but you may want to heat the vinyl. Try to keep the needle flat to the head. You do not want to push it straight in. One last thing, rooting needles have a "sweet" spot. If you start to not pick up hair, just turn the needle 1/4 round until you find it again. I am new to reborning, but this is the information that I have found to be helpful so just thought I'd pay it forward. One final thought.....HAVE FUN!

Rooting tool
by: Sherri Keller'Woo

I have bought every kind of tool only to wind up putting a thick rubber band on end of needle until I bought that little wooden German rooting needle holder & think I got it from Dolls by Sandie & I love it. Some of the others cause needle to bend & it is just perfect. A little wooden peg comes out of base & you put needle in the grove & push it back in & it does'nt come loose. Simply but so effective. Missed your other question, but stuffing head with paper towels makes it easier & if vynil hard use a sock with rice in it & heat in microwave & put in head; keeps from breaking so many needles. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Hugs
