UNCUT FELTING NEEDLES FOR ROOTING REBORN DOLL HAIR

by JUDY
(MARION, NC)

I am trying to root my first head of hair on a reborn doll and I have already broken over a dozen Rooting Needles. Today I received a new shipment and they must be cut but no where can I find that tells you how to cut them and what size they should be. I do not want to resort to wigs but needles are not cheap. Please give me some advice.
Thanks!
Judy

NEEDLE NIGHTMARE OVER
by: ANGIE MAC

I have not been rooting that long and perfectly understand the nightmare of snapping needle, certainly some of this will be down to lack of experience from the artist, but there are other factors.TYPE OF KIT,some kits are not as soft,NEEDLES,the strength and size.I started with 38 gauge, but didnt get on with them as they kept snapping, then i changed to 42 gauge GERMAN FORK needles, they are great, ive done two 22inch heads and only broken 2 and no cutting required.HEAT the head also,i use wheat bags as they retain natural moisture and stay hot longer, this really helps. When you use the needle you know when they are about to snap, due to them gettin hot through friction, they bend before they snap, here is a supplier i use off of ebay, the needle are great value and the her service is great, let me know how you get on hun.xx SUPPLIER(NESSIEJAY)

Hello Since this is your first time rooting try using a 38 gauge rooting needle. The higher the number the thinner the needle is. When rooting try not to move your hand in any direction except in and out . Heating the vinyl a little will soften it and makes it easier to root.

As far as cutting your own needles I use a 8" bolt cutters that I got from a hardwear store. I also use 2 very small vice grips clamped on to each end of the rooting needle making sure not to put the vice grips on the rooting part of the needle but above where the needle is thicker and then cut it between the 2 vice grips . The vice grips hold the 2 ends so when I do cut them they don't go flying and you should wear safty glasses when cutting the needles.
If you look at the needle it is 3 stages of thickness the thinist part being the part that roots ... I usally cut my needle at the point where the other 2 thicker parts meet . I can't say how long since there are so many different needles.
Rooting is time consuming and takes time to learn but with patience and practice the real effect it gives the reborn is rewarding when finished. There are some good short video's on You Tube for rooting a reborn and you might want to look into that.
I hope this info helps. Maybe others out there have better ideas and info. Good luck in your reborning. sincerely, Grace
