Reborn Help! Experienced Artist Stumped.

by jan-marie
(knoxville, tennessee)

I have reborned dozens of dolls and have been successful in different races & ethnicities, but this one I am stumped on. I am working a custom of an Indian baby, but I can't keep the tone from turning out yellow. I have had to give up on TWO sculpts already because I just kept adding color and adding color hoping the magic would happen eventually but nope, one came out orange, the other yellow.

Can anybody share a secret with me on the right blend of colors to get an Indian skin tone. (A baby from India, not American Indian just to clarify) Any help you can suggest is appreciated, I've done all the crying I can do and I am almost ready to just give up on the project altogether!
Jan-Marie

Hi Jan Marie,

I am from Knoxville, TN, and would love the art of reborning. Is there anyway way we could maybe get together, and you could show me the technique. I am willing to pay you. My e-mail address is debra_fry2000@yahoo.com.

Thanks

Hi Jan Marie

Did you try looking at the color wheel and using the opposite color or the shade of yellow to neutralize it a bit?
I like to add mine to a bit of the flesh tones.

Hope this helps , would love to see pics.

Hugs
Crystal

Try more of a rusty color. Maybe a mix of burnt umber and red, thinned out really well. Go slowly and don't do another layer until you're sure you like the way it's headed. You also might want to try some ethnic flesh paints. A faint blue wash should help take away the yellow, too. Best of luck!

Jan Marie,
I know a great book that can help you. I've used it and it makes a great reference book.
"Color Mixing Recipes for Portraits" by William F. Powell. I'm sure they sell it on ebay.
Good Luck
