This is my interview with reborn doll artist Beverly Hursh, the winner of our "reborn doll contest for December 2009.

How did you get involved in the art of reborning?

I was looking online and ran across them. Like everyone I was fascinated at the realism and how beautiful they are. I couldn't resist so I bought one! I have collected dolls all my life and have a background in art so I decided to try an make one myself. I got online and looked up free tutorials. I was amazed at how much information I found. I bought a Toys r us doll and the basic supplies I would need. Just a inexpensive doll to start with. My family was very encouraged by the amount of realism I created in the first reborn. I kept going.....4 years now and I love reborning more and more. My favorite thing is fooling people with these reborns. I never get tired of seeing the expressions on peoples faces when I tell them they are not real. Its priceless.

In your experience, how much has the popularity of reborning grown in recent times?

Reborning has grown 10 fold since I started. Of course I have met alot of people that don't know what a reborn is and its fun to promote the art.

The end result of the dolls is amazingly lifelike, how much time and money can go into making your best dolls?

Each doll that I make is one of a kind. I look at each sculpt as an individual personality that I'm about to create. I don't think about time or expense when I'm creating a reborn. I been known to spend $100 on just the perfect outfit.

How many dolls have you made?

More than 200

What is the general response you've received from people who've seen the dolls or taken classes?

People’s responses to my reborns has been overwhelmingly positive! Their jaw drops and they say “Your kidding that’s a real baby?!” and I say no its not and then I will pick them up so they can see how they move and everyone around says awwwwwww. It’s a show going out with one of my little reborns. I like to take them out to dinner with me. Usually my dinner goes home in a box to be eaten later and I love every minute of it.

Is there a certain type of person this craft appeals to? Age? Gender? Occupation?

Everyone loves babies. There hasn’t been a certain group, gender or even a certain occupation. My experience has been that even men are fascinated with the reborns as much as women and even children. ?

Do you do custom orders? What are people desiring custom orders usually after?

Yes, I do quite a few memorial babies. Most people that are looking for a custom order to celebrate the life of a child that has passed. They are looking for an artist to create a reborn in the perfect likeness of that child.

What do you say to people who are scared or unnerved by the lifelikeness of the dolls?

People will come up to me and ask “How old is the baby” that’s when I tell them its not real. Some will take a step back and say “that’s freaky” I simply say some people do feel that way and ask if they would like to hold them, some will say no and others will.

What would you say to people who are interested in reborning, but unsure whether it is something that they can do? How much skill is involved?

I would tell them to give it a shot. You never know what you can do till you try. Join reborning groups so you can have support of others who are learning and people who are more skilled to give you advise and help.

Can someone make a living from creating reborn dolls? Is there a strong market for them?

Oh yes! You can make a living creating reborn dolls. Like any business it takes time to create a following and get your name out there.

There has been a fair amount of controversy over reborning being used as a tool to deal with grief or loss, in your experience do you encounter this regularly or is it exceptional?

In my experience as a reborn artist the reborn is a great tool for dealing with the loss of child. Other reborn artist and collectors will understand what I’m saying. It is soothing to hold a reborn that feels like a real baby. Some how it calms that inner desire to hold that child that is now gone even when we know in our hearts that the reborn can never replace that child. I’ve had clients tell me that getting a reborn that looks and feels like their baby that has passed was a very healing experience for them. How can that be controversial.

Any tips for beginner artists?

Keep going, don’t give up, and be a sponge. Learn as much as you can. Enter every contest even if you think you won’t win, join a artist group, go online research pictures of babies, study where veins are located in the body. And most important learn the color wheel. It will help you in creating life like skin tones.

Any memorable/funny stories from customers or personal experience with your dolls?

There are a few funny stories but one that stands out in my mind starts out sad but in the end is so funny. I had client that had contacted me for a custom memorial baby. She had a still born child just months earlier. We had worked back and forth through emails creating the most perfect likeness of her child. She was so excited when she received her that she had to take the reborn to work and show her off. She wanted her to look perfect so she took the reborn to work in a Moses basket. At the end of the day she put the reborn baby in the front seat of the car with her for the ride home. This is the part where it gets funny and she tells it better that I do. There was a road block for what ever reason. As the police officer walked up to the car……He told her that he would have to write her a ticket for not having the baby restrained in a car seat. She repeatedly told him that it was not a real baby. He didn’t believe her. He thought she was just trying to get out of a ticket. She said “Beverly I had to shove that doll out the window in his face before he would believe that it wasn’t real.”
