Realistic Baby Dolls - Who Buys Them?
So who chooses to buy lifelike baby dolls?
Those who purchase realistic baby dolls are as varied as the artists who make them.
Many forums and blogs have had very animated
discussions on the pros and cons of those who collect these. I have read very upset mothers who feel these reborn dolls are
an attempt to replace having real children, for example. I find it very interesting how strong the emotional response
to realistic baby dolls is.

It seems to me that there are mainly four different types of people who choose to spend their hard earned dollars on lifelike dolls.
Doll collectors are the first. There are doll collectors who have extensive collections and like to stay on top of the latest trends.
They may think nothing of dropping $2000 on an OOAK ( one of a kind) doll. Some follow a particular artist and purchase accordingly. Others
request custom dolls and others may collect ethnic babies. Often doll collectors will have a room or a section of their home
dedicated to their doll collection, complete with bassinettes and cribs.

Secondly, there are those who just simply love babies. Children and adults alike who love to hold and nurture a baby. Due to the realism
of these dolls, children who are allowed to play and care for a reborn get to interact with a doll that both looks and feels like a real
baby. The doll may also be an ethnic match to the child. Many cultures are happy to present their children with a doll that
resembles them, rather than the mainstream caucasian, blond haired, blue eyed doll you'll find in toy stores everywhere.

Another group of people who choose to buy realistic baby dolls are those who work in healthcare. Reborn dolls can be used very effectively
as therapy dolls. They are used in treating the elderly suffering from dementia or alzheimers. They are used to teach parenting classes and
prenatal classes. They are well received in homes caring for the disabled as they bring about the feelings and motions of caring, rocking,
soothing and nurturing.

There are some people who purchase realistic baby dolls for their own personal, emotional healing as well. Women who are unable to bear children,
or those who have lost a child. Some reborn doll artists cater to this clientele, working with the family to create memorial or portrait
baby dolls. To some of these doll collectors, the reborn baby fills a void and offers them a tangible, lifelike representation of what they have
lost.
If you are among those who feel these dolls are 'creepy' or 'weird', that is your choice. However, like it or not, the reborn
dolls of today do arouse powerful human reactions and emotions, all specific to the person. Whether they collect
lifelike baby dolls to show, to play with, to make money from or to heal, reborn dolls certainly do get a reaction.
