Not getting hair rooted on my reborn?

by Hanny van der Stap
(Holland, Rotterdam)

I'am halfway rooting my reborn but suddenly I can not get a ""hair"" in anymore. I have checked the needle and there is nothing wrong with it. Also tried a new needle, same problem. Is something wrong with the mohair or the vinyl?
This is my first time so I hope somebody recognizes the problem.

Thanks for you help in advance.

Hanny

rooting hair

You may have to fill in with a larger needle, maybe a size 38 if nothing else works. I have had to do this occasionally. It does make the hair look more clumpy but if it's just in a few spots you can usually blend it in with the finer rooted hair and it will look OK. Also, I notice that sometimes I need to use a new piece of mohair when the piece you're working with gets "ratty" and it just won't go in! Good luck!

needles

When I have that happen, first I try rotating the needle. I rotare 1/4 turns and try each one..if that doesn't work..then I go to a new needle. Another thing is it might be the angle you are using? just a thought. If I'm using a 38 which is a bit stronger, then I kjust put a little pressure downward on the needle and try that. Sometimes it will take a bit more hair, so you just pull the extra ones out. I try to leave no more than 3. You are most likely done by now.. and I hope you are because that would mean you found out the problem.

Rooting!
by: Sherri Keller'Woo

I buy my needles at "Hobby Lobby" & I have ordered the German on line & all of the others, but I never have problems with these from hobby store & if they put too much hair just pluck & really thin hair out before pushing needle. The name of them "Clover" Art #8905 last longer & don't drive me crazy; they come in heavey & fine & either one is ok. Hope that helps also warm rice sock & or stuff head with paper towels to keep from denting in as can break needle. Try your local hobby shop.

good idea
by: Hanny

Hi Roxan,

Thanks for your good ideas. I will give it a try.
I use a needle with 1 flat side at the end and 2 little ""hooks"".

I also found that getting heat inside the head helps a bit. Just some old sock with hot rice in it and let it warm the head from inside out.

Anyway it is not als simple as I thougt. But the painting went well and ""lidy"" looks like our
granddaugther so I hope it all will work out.

Thanks very much for your help and I will post more when I am done with the head.
Worst case scenario is getting an pretty wig but for now it is nog yet an option.

Bey bey,

Hanny

Something to try, it may help
by: Roxan

I had the same problem with one of my doll heads. There were just some spots that the hair wouldn't root.

So I tried putting a little of Aleene's jewel-it glue on the inside of the head and let it dry overnight. Then I tried rooting again & it stayed in this time when I rooted it. So maybe the vinyl was thinner in that spot and just couldn't grab the hair.

Also what type of needle are you using? Is it a german forked needle or a crown needle with the barbs?

hair rooting problem
by: Hanny

Hi,
I use a 42 needle. I already changed the needle for a brandnew one but that doesn't help.
And the most stupid thing is that it went quit well (for my first time).

I really don't know what is wrong.
Perhaps the head needs warmth???

thanks you so far for your answers and I'm open to new ideas.

Sometimes the barbs wear down from use.
I have found changing to a new needle is the answer for me.
I hope this helps you too!
