My reborn doll is chalky + shiny in different spots?

by Karen

This is not looking reborn

This is not looking reborn

I Have the Eden bountiful baby vinyl head. I have used the Genesis paints in their kit. I painted all of the layers. I am afraid to use my oven. I have used my heat gun. It still does not look real.
I heated it til it was really hot + it started to smell good. Then I stopped cause I got scared that I was going to start a fire!
Help???

Chalky/shiny spots
by: Sandy

Yes, the chalkiness is caused by too much paint, either being mixed with not enough paint thinner or by applying too heavy. Thin that paint really thin and apply sparingly, pouncing it out good. Also, the paint gun is only for small touch-up jobs, not the whole doll. Use a good oven and test the temperature with a good thermometer. I got the one from Secrist. If you bake it properly, at 265 degrees for 8 min. exactly, you should not have any problems. I use a timer with minutes and seconds and take it out as soon as that timer goes off. I've had excellent results.
Also, if you have some shiny spots, use a matte varnish or shine remover. Enjoy your wonderful new hobby!

gas oven
by: Pat

I have a gas oven, and set it on no 3, always make sure limbs are in centre of tray and tray has a soft cloth on it, not sure about the dangers of the oven but tend to hold my breath when I open the door and wash oven out after finishing baby, I agree with comments about your paint, less is more as they say, it's one of the lessons learned that keeping the paint thin ( so you can see the bottom on your paint dish when you brush across the base)is the way to do it,everybody gets better with practice, Pat xx

heat in oven
by: Anonymous

Hun, dont be afraid to bake in the oven..265 degrees, 8 mins. I use a heat gun as well, I think you may have had it to close to the to the baby and probably by what you said left in same spot to long. When I use the HG I hold it at least 1 1/2--2 ins away from part and constantly moving around over where I painted for maybe 2-3 seconds in one spot.

The Chalky color I think you didnt thin your paint enough, you want it to be watery (like water color paints)These paints are transparent, thin layers, several layers to acheive depth, and a realistic skin tones.

I bought a convection oven recently & it has helped, but beware you still need to open that oven & check those parts for being too hot & I have melted my share of toes; they always seem to get it. I bought the walmart thermometer too, ug. I might take mine out if vynil feels too hot & let it cool & put it back & it gets the job done. Also purple wash inside with genesis will dry slower & bake awhile & then blow hot air with heat gun in opening. Just be very patient with your baking & a q-tip moisened will tell you if paint is dry. Usually over cooking brings out that shine so some places in your oven may be hotter like towards the back of oven. In my old oven that was happening. Remember this art takes patience & work with your layers until each dried & cool completely before applying next layer. This craft has taught me to be very patient & stop when I am tired & not get in a hurry! I check my pieces now for heat on vynil & can always let it rest & cool & put back in & the paint will still dry; does'nt have to be a consistent 8 min just 8 min at 265. Hope this helps! I have learned the hard way! The bigger your confection oven the better too & mine is not too large & have to be careful of thos electric burners.

Shiny & chalky
by: Anonymous

Hi! You say you painted all your layers...did you paint each layer & let dry & bake or heat each layer separately (I hope)? Each layer must be painted, then let to dry and then baked (or heated with gun) befor the next lay is added. Also, each layer should be very very thin and should be completely dry before baking.

I use a dual function oven (conventional bake or convection bake), and the convection function is best but either way you really need to use an oven thermometer. My convection function heats up to 15 degrees higher than the regular bake function even when set to the same temp. so you gotta check the thermometer!

Good luck!

YUP

I agree. I have found that the heat gun is good for little things..like touch up stuff, but for the big stuff...put it in the oven. Once you do that, you will see how wonderful they come out. I used a heat gun when I first got started and didn't know it, but the heat gun was faulty. It didn't heat up like it should have..so then the paint came off...so I left it on longer and of course that was when the heat worked...omg..shine city. Make sure you get an oven thermometer..I don't care how old your oven is. I find that I have to rest my oven temp right at 270 for it to stay even at the 265 degrees and don't leave it..I tried used a thermometer from Walmart..you know cheaper..well the numbers are so small I can't see them. If you buy one that is made for this purpose..the dail has color coding in it which is easier to see. So..instead of just buying the good one..I paid extra to get one that doesn't work for me..then had to buy the other. *sigh* story of my life..lol Also try to rub with your thrumb or finger over the chacky spots and see if they rub out. I saw Denise Pratt do it in her video. Good luck
