Is there anything else I can use to fix the shine on my reborn dolls?

Besides the genesis heat set varnish? I hate this stuff. I make sure not to put a lot on as I apply with the sponge but it either still makes the vinyl feel like sandpaper or it turns white on the vinyl. I have used it straight and have tried adding a bit of thinner to it but no luck. And there's still shine on my reborn babies. Do i have to use this stuff? I know this is important especially if I plan to take pictures. But whats the use if I cant get it right? Thank-you
