air dry paints NEW
by: Anonymous

I have completed seven babies using the Luminaire air dry paints. The babies have awesome color and the paint is very difficult to get off. If you need to remove the paint, nothing fancy needed. I used rubbing alcohol and cleaned the paint off one whole doll I didn't like the color on. Alcohol then soapy water winced the doll back to square one foe us overly meticulous painters.
I have tried genesis heat set paints also. I can take my paint with me anywhere and don't need to worry about a oven. I am so pleased at my choice to purchase air dry paints.

ACRYLICS NEW
by: Anonymous

YES...acrylic paint is airdry paint! People will say its no good but if you apply using the right techniques and practise a lot before doing an expensive kit youll get there. Just remember you HAVE to seal the vinyl before AND after painting or it wont stay on. You can buy matt sealer from the same art suppliers. Also apply VERY thinly and allow to completely dry between layers. The paint must be milky consistency and although it may look as if its doing nothing....once it dries it goes brighter so beware of overdoing it! Hope that helps. Good luck!

air dry paint on reborn dolls NEW
by: Anonymous

Air dry paints shouldnt be applied without first 'sealing' the vinyl, using 50/50 mixture of sealer and medium...then some water and pounce doll with a big sponge all over. Let dry for at least 30 minutes... It stops the paint seeping in and also gives a good base to apply colour....Then, for first coat of paint use a blob of flesh colour plus same sized blob of medium mixed with some water to almost watery cosistency. The paint dries in about 30 minutes and you can then add more....but dont rush if it looks like nothing is happening!!! These paints DO dry in darker eventually so dont over colour. Better to go slow and wait to see. Also, if you paint too soon again between coats your paint can become tacky and will come off youll make it patchy each time you pounce, spoiling your already good work. So be patient! Once all layers are dry and have 'cured' (i.e. settled, dried all through, colours have brightened up , not tacky etc) for at least two weeks (the more coats youve used the longer curing should take!)you can then seal your doll all over in 'matt' varnish, and add shine to lips etc if desired. If you seal too early, the paint retains moisture which could make your doll turn mouldy in a few months time. Once dry and sealed properly your painting wont wash or rub off unless dipped in paint stripper or acetone.((N.B. Air dry paint applied staight onto a vinyl doll without adding the medium and sealers wont take,(as its is acrylic based and too similar to vinyl... or it will eventually slide off the doll... so beware and follow all the steps and your doll will stay beautiful for a very long time.)Good luck x

Answer for Maxine NEW

Hi Maxine! You can use either water or thinner to mix the air dry paint.

And you should wash your kit and then let it dry before you work on it. This will help remove any residual elements from the manufacturing and shipping process.

Air Dry Paints NEW
by: Angie

Just ran across this page while doing some research on containers to store mixed air dry paints.

I am often dismayed at the bad rap that air dry paints have gotten in the reborn community, especially by die hard Genesis users. I have tried many different paints and found merits and draw backs in ALL of them. I choose a paint system depending on what kind of kit or doll I am working on and what I want to achieve.

I have worked extensively with air dry paints. I have lots of information on my website on how to use both the LDC paints from Dolldreams as well as Jo Sonjas paints.

If used and cured PROPERLY both paint systems ARE permanent. I prefer the Dolldreams LDC paints because they do not have to be sealed and are more matte than most air dry paints. However, I have produced some lovely babies with the Jo Sonjas paints as well and they are a cheaper alternative that I sometimes still use when warranted. New Air Dry Paints NEW
by: Lisa

I have always used the air dry paints and have never had the paint "wash off". The paints must be applied in thin layers. They are permanent after 20 min. If you use paint that has gels mixed in or you add a gel to retard the drying process, then you would want to wait longer before adding other layers or "washing" the vinyl.

I have recently switched to the Luminaire Air Dry Paints. I am overjoyed at the results these paints produce. They are so easy to work with and the seller is very kind. You can find them on ebay. I'm not sure the specific air dry paints you use, but you may want to try the Luminaire Paints.

Good Luck!

AIR DRY PAINTS ARE GREAT NEW
by: Anonymous

I use air dry paints and i like them very much. You have to know what your doing they make a beautiful baby and they don't rub off. It took me 4 hours with nail polish remover to take all the paint off one of my dolls. So the paint is on to stay.

Air Dry Paint NEW
by: Lisa

I use the air dry paints. For an example of my work, see Baby Bethany under Baby of the Month. Let me begin by saying: what you choose to use should be based on work space, equipment, and time issues. I chose the air dry medium for personal preferences. I won't go into every detail as to why, but I will say there is a benefit of working with your sculpt and putting it down and not worrying about it in the oven. That being said, Air Dry paints are exactly that, they air dry, and become permanent rather quickly, making them very unforgiving to mistakes. There are some gels you can use to mix onto the brush and then dip the brush in the paint so that if a mistake is made, it can be corrected by wiping it off, again within a time frame. Also, if you have made a mistake, from what I've read, a quick scrub with paint thinner will diminish the effects. If you use air dry, please be very careful with the veining. Blue paint needs to be mixed with a good amount of thinner or you'll have very obvious veins versus a subtle look. None of my babies have ever ended with a shine, but I think that develops if you use too much of the "gel" I spoke of earlier. Remember, in using the paints, a little goes a long way. I have never used genesis heat paints so unfortunately I can not compare the two, but suggest if you continue to use the air dry paint, buy some "boo-boo" parts. I have mentioned this in my other posts. Though each vinyl kit can vary as to how it takes up the paint, if you have parts to test first you'll have a better idea if your paint needs to be mixed with more thinner, or if your technique needs to be adjusted. Good Luck and have fun!

I STARTED WITH THEM NEW
by: Aviva~

aCTUALLY i FOUND THE PAINT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO REMOVE FROM THE VINYL. i THINK IT'S GOOD IN T THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO COOK THEM. yOU HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL BECAUSE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SEE ANY PAINT ON THE DOLL. i MADE THE MISTAKE OF PUTTING ON TOO MANY LAYERS. WHEN IT HAD TIME TO SET OVERNIGHT, I HAD A VERY, VERY DARKSKINNED BABY. I COULD NOT BELIEVE MY EYES, SO IF YOU USE THEM..MAKE SURE YOU DON'T DO WHAT i DID. i TRIED TO GET THE PAINT OFF AND IT JUST WOULD NOT COME OFF IT GETS VERY SHINY ALSO.
tHE MATTE VARNISH i DID NOT CARE FOR..BUT MAYBE I WAS THE ONE THAT MESSED UP. IF YOU DECIDE TO USE THEM OR THE GENESIS REMEMBER..TO HAVE FUN. I'M LOOKING AT THE LDC PAINTS RIGHT NOW.
