How do you use a convection oven to reborn baby dolls?

by Jan Yopp
(North Carolina)

For two and a half years I have been using air dry paints when reborning dolls and have been very happy with them. But...after trying the GSH paints and comparing the two, I noticed a lot of difference. I had tried them early on in my reborning but was concerned about fumes etc. Okay...now that I'm hooked on the heat set paints..I am thinking of getting a convection oven because I really don't want to use my home oven all the time. I would like to know what you other artists think about convection ovens...how do you use them.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hamilton beach oven

Hi I have just purchased the Hamilton oven as well. Do you use pollyfill in the tray to bake the babies or a tea towel?

When I use the convection setting and have it put on 265 it would melt (or make it very shiny) most of it in about 7 to 8 min. The moving hot air just cooks faster and gets hot faster. When I have the dial set on 202 degrees, the INSIDE of the oven is about 268 degrees. I just wanted to clarify my post. If I have a question about it, I take a little q tip and moisten the end and go to a place like the back of the head and rub it with the q Tip and if paint comes off, then as soon as it cools completely...I put it back in afor about 4 min. just to make sure.

Convection ovens

I have been using mine for almost a year and have probably done more than a dozen babies. Be sure you get a thermometer and check often. You need 265 degrees for 8 minutes. I use mine in conjunction with the hand held heat set gun (for small things...)nails, lips, etc... I have not melted anything yet... Good luck!

Hi Jan

I actually use a Hamilton Beach double (tall) convection oven (two 12 inch pizza's are advertised can fit into it). It has taken awhile, but finally down to knowing that it's set at around 200 degrees and I don't go more than 7 minutes. BUT...now I've heard that the turbo cooker is much better and you can set it and it goes off and you don't have to make sure you are when it's finished. You do have to use the 3 inch extender ring. Are you a member of the Yahoo Reborn Help group? A lot of them use it and sing it's praises. It has taken me about 8 mo. to get my conv. oven to the point that I'm not melting heads...I've done about 3 of them.
