How do you buy glass eyes for reborn dolls?

by Lisa
(USA)

I'm searching for glass eyes for my reborn vinyl kit.... the problem is I don't know how to choose the right ones. There are round and oval, flatback and completely round.... paperweight, living eyes, etc.

I was wondering if someone could tell me what is the best glass eye to look for that gives the most realistic eye?

Also, I like the German glass eyes, but they are completely round and I am used to putting in the eyes that don't have backs, so is there something special I need to do to set the eyes?

Thanks!

I'm just not sure how these questions and answers are dated. I don't even remember writing the first comment I made and since that time I have made many dolls with the round German glass eyes and I love them. So not sure write..me avivaloveshim@yahoo.com if you need me.

I don't know how fancy or expensive you want to get, but I use the half round eyes from Secrist. They have a good assortment of colors and look very nice at a very reasonable price, around $5.
I just cut the vinyl socket half way and use hemostats to install the eyes and glue the socket shut again. It has worked well for dolls from different companies and I have had no problems. But maybe you want something more expensive. (?)

glass eyes
by: Vivian

Well, I'm not that much of a pro on the type of eyes, but there are some glass that is soft. I have never actually used the round German eyes (a little expensive and besides, I have found that some eyes that are not half the price are very, very nice.) I just bought my first pair of crystal eyes and they were right around 30.00. The only problem with putting that much into the eyes is that you most likely will not recover that much when you sell the doll. But what I would do first would be to talk to the company that you bought your doll kit from. Then you just need to know the size of the eye of the kit you have..being usually around l8-22 mm as average. What I have seen is that you would position the eye and place the glue of course on the eye and vinyl that isn't showing...hopefully lol. You might check at Dolls by Sandie or Sandy and she might be more able to point you in the right direction. You might also check out the old Masterpiece eyes. They are very nice but I had trouble with a good fit as I think they are more appropreate for the Beringuer dolls.
There is some background info on the mouth blown ones which are about 34.00. I think the Bountiful or Eyeco are really just as pretty.
