Holes showing after rooting hair on my reborn doll?

What do you do about the needle holes that show through after rooting the hair? Every time I root one of my reborn dolls I have these ugly holes in the scalp. I use 38 gauge needle. When I see other dolls on the internet for sale, I do not see these holes in there heads. What am I doing wrong? Please help me.

You're welcome:)

Hmm, I had noticed some of the Bountiful Baby heads do that as well (leave holes that is). I think it's becase, in my case anyway, that after they've been baked so many times the heads tend to become a bit more firm than they were to start with. My favorites are the Adrie Stoete babies, the vinyl used don't seem to leave that large of holes. I suggest letting them sit for a few days before you seal them on the inside of the head, the holes might become less noticeable. (Though it'll drive you mad just waiting on them, lol!)

Also, many suggest using the 40-guage needles or the new german needles with only one barb, I just never tend to like them as much myself (just a personal preference). The larger the number the smaller the needle, so that may help you out some as well;)

There's a "particular" way to hold these needles, I tend to keep rotating until the needle roots smoothly, but a flat side of the needle should be horizontal to the floor when you root, it picks up hair much more smoothly and roots a bit easier.

Also, practice makes perfect (as much as we all hate to hear it). But before you know it, you'll discover your work has bounded ahead of what it used to be;)

I wish there was something else I could think of to tell you, but if I do think of anything else I'll be sure to post it.

Hope this helps a bit:)

I am rooting Bountiful Babies mostly. Occasionally I will root one of Romie's reborns. They are all very soft vinyl. I was thinking about getting some smaller needles but I had just ordered several of the 38 gauge. What size do you recommend for my next order. I am still learning. I have actually only completed 2 dolls and the rooting process is by far the most difficult. The swirl is absolutely horrible. Thanks for your help.

Hi

Have you tried heating the vinyl after you are finished rooting?
The heat makes the vinyl close up a little.
A smaller size needle will make smaller hairs also.

Some of the hard vinyl just seems to have larger holes.

Probably nothing, which types of dolls are you rooting? The harder-headed dolls often times leave holes after rooting, you can give it about 24-36 hrs or more before sealing and the holes will generally begin to get smaller. After a week or so passes you usually can't see them anymore.
Most of the softer vinyled dolls don't quite have this problem.
Also, you can try a smaller needle, which will leave a smaller hole:)
Hope this helps!
