hi my mom and I are learning to reborn dolls.. I have fallen in love bringing these babies to life however my mom has had a struggle she has recently made a huge no no and I don't know how to fix it.. she started to root the hair using a 38g needle and mohair she didn't like the way it turned out so she ripped all of it out.. needless 2 say there are holes every where that can't be covered any way i know. can someone tell me what I can do to hopefully fix it or make it look better? she wants to put a wig on it but you can see the holes on the sides of the head where she ripped out the hair she rooted.. she's frustrated and ready to give up can any one lend a helping hand and let me know how i can fix this poor baby's head.. thanks

All very good suggestions! :)

I use the 42g forked needles and highly recommend them. And I just ordered my melting pot last week, so I'll be doing that soon.

What I have been doing is, when done rooting, before gluing - have a pan of almost boiling water and a pan of cold water, use tongs to hold the head (the rooted part) in the hot water for 10 seconds, then put in the cold water for 10 seconds. Let air dry completely before gluing. This will shrink the holes a lot. Warning - do not use air dry gloss before doing this - wait until after!

Also, if unhappy with hair quality, try slumberlandnursery.com - excellent mohair, you will not be disappointed!

If you need any more tutorials or tips, I have a page of links on my website for the ones I found most helpful when first starting out. :)

Best of luck!

You might try heating the head with a heat gun for a few minutes, it helps close or shrink the holes. After rooting any hair, it helps to heat the head with a heat gun or hair dryer also, just to help shrink the holes made by the needles. Also, you can use a melting pot, or an electric potpourri pot, and put salt or sand in it, and keep it on while you are rooting. Use two needles, one to use while the other is heating. *you would need two holders also* Use the heated needle to root until it starts to cool then switch to the other heated needle, putting the cooled needle to heat again. Continue this way so you always have a heated needle. It also helps when rooting with a smaller needle. You might also try the German forked needles,in a 42 gauge (very fine). They have a forked end instead of the barbs, and make for very tiny holes, looking very realistic when done.
They are available through Bountiful Baby Reborn supply, and priced very well by the ounce (about 25 needles to the ounce.) Hope this helps you.
Good luck!
