Realistic Reborn Dolls

Do you apply veining before the skin tone on a reborn doll?

Hi there! I hope you can help me. I'm new to all this, but after buying my first reborn doll from ebay, I'm hooked.

The thing is I've watched loads of dvd's/youtube and I'm not sure if you apply veining before the skin colour? I know you can do an internal wash, but don't really fancy doing it this way, as I think I would prefer to detail the doll more on the outside. Also how many skin tones do you need to apply? At the moment I've bought a sucky lip doll to start on, that I've taken the paint off of, but it is very orange in colour, should I do a blue wash, before I start anything else?. So any advice would be well received as I'm sure I will have loads of questions to ask.
Kind Regards
Debbie

after your first or second skin layer
by: dot

It depends how many layers you do really. I find that if you do the veins last they dont look as real. If you do them first they can be a bit too feint. Do them after your first or second layer of skin tone and before mottling and i find this gives the best result on my reborn dolls

Welcome to reborning!
by: Sabriam

Hello and welcome to the addicting world of reborning! :)

The veins - some people do before, some do after, I do in the middle. I do the mottling and about 2-5 layers of skin, then the veins, then the other half of the skin tones.

The skin tone layers - again, depends on the artist. Some people do two, some do 40. A lot also depends on how thin you make your paint. I do thin washes, and usually 5-12 layers of skin tone washes. Then, of course, all the detailing layers and such.

On a color wheel, blue is opposite of orange, so yes, you will need to do a blue wash. Make sure that it's very thin and also bake it right away. The longer the paint sits on there, the more it soaks in. You don't want a blue baby.

I have a bunch of links for tips/tutorials on my website - here's the link if you want more info: http://www.edenslittleones.com/Links-for-beginners.php

Also, we have a wonderful reborning group (for artists, seamstresses who sew for reborns, for collectors, and anyone who are interested in reborns) called Safe Haven. It was a yahoo group until last week, when we moved it to a forum. You are welcome to join us if you like - we have lots of tips/tutorials, plus fellow artists :)

Hope all this helps and hope to see you in the group!

Veining and Layering
by: Lisa

First, let me begin by welcoming you to the world of reborns..... watch out because once you get started... it's really hard to stop. LOL! I do not do an internal wash either. I paint my details, layers, and color correction washes depending on the sculpt and the vinyl. You will find that each vinyl will take up the paint differently, so there isn't really a set method or paint by number.... you'll have to adjust a little bit each time, especially when you start painting you'll see some look better more mottled then others. I paint a light layer of veining first, then add my flesh layers. I will add finer capillaries and veining in between layers as well. As far as how many layers, again that depends on the vinyl, the mottling and the look you are going for, but no matter how many layers you use.... only use a light layer each time. It's easier to add more, but not to take away, especially if you are using air dry paints. For the orange baby, you will need to use a blue wash to color correct. I take a very slight amount of blue and mix it in with your flesh layer and pounce all over. Keep doing that until you neutralize the orange look.

Have fun!
