Realistic Reborn Dolls

Are reborn dolls sturdy enough to be played with by a child?

I want to purchase one for my daughter as a "big sister" gift when our next child is born. Can she play with a reborn doll or are they strictly for show?

Daycare Reborn

It can be done and there are different ways depending on what you are looking for. I reborned a basic baby (garage sale doll) for the kids at the daycare I work at. It gets hauled around by a 2 year old most the time but all ages from 18 months to 10 years old play with it 10 hours a day 5 days a week. I rooted the eyelashes and triple sealed them and did painted hair and sealed the whole doll. I also didn't weigh the head or limbs just the torso a bit. She's been living there 2 months and looks like the day I finished her. For an older child with the extra effort Sabriam mentioned by the artist it would work well too.

making a baby child proof

maybe if the doll was stuffed well with polyester so the head and limbs werent as floppy and leave out the beads. maybe the hair could be painted on instead of rooted. The doll could be sealed really well.

Depends on the child and the reborn
by: Sabriam

It depends on the child. A reborn needs to be treated like a real baby. Some children are too young or too rough for a reborn. Some children are gentle and know how to treat a baby or can be taught how to. I know some 2-year-olds that are more ready for a reborn baby than some 10-year-olds and vise versa.

It also depends on the reborn and the artist. If I know that one of my reborns is going to be handled by a child (a family baby, or a child's baby), I take extra precautions. I add an extra layer of sealant on the paint, an extra layer of sealant glue for the hair inside the head, and stronger magnets for the pacifier/hair bows. It doesn't make the reborn absolutely accident-proof, but it does improve the chances. I'm sure most artists would be happy to create a reborn who will be a family baby or responsible child's baby.

That is a wonderful idea for a "big sister gift!" And congrats on your addition to the family as well :)

Baby hugs,
